Today, I stumbled on Aaron David Rock’s doctor of ministry thesis at Liberty University. In it, he cites an acrostic for mentoring created by Professor Abe Brown and referenced in “Mentoring: The Missing Key in the Equipping of the Saints, ” a manual presented at Victory Bible College International, Spring 2004.
The acrostic is M.E.N.T.O.R.I.N.G.
Brown explained that a spiritual coach should participate in:
- Modeling Christ-like behavior, ministry skill, faithfulness, and fruitfulness.
- Encouraging those he mentors in times of difficulty, hardship, stress, and apathy.
- Nurturing the person as a special individual with a focus on their character, gifts, and calling.
- Training and equipping those he mentors to the fullness of life and ministry preparedness.
- Organizing, as in helping students to organize time, money, relationships, and ministry.
- Relationship building based on a genuine, selfless relationship that gradually deepens and opens.
- Interceding because you cannot lead people unless you intercede for those people.
- Navigating by helping students to navigate major life decisions, relationships, and opportunities.
- Growing. This is the ultimate test of a mentor: did he really help the person grow?
