Goals, Strategies, Objectives and Tactics

If you are working in performance management or strategy, it is important to know the difference between Goals, Strategies, Objectives and Tactics (G’SOT).

  • A goal is a broad primary outcome.
  • A strategy is the approach you take to achieve a goal.
  • An objective is a measurable step you take to achieve a strategy.
  • A tactic is a tool you use in pursuing an objective associated with a strategy.

Note, a SMART goal is an objective that is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
